「Something to Shout About」單元 — 寫作工具箱 (Writing Toolkit)
- Marx 相對剝奪理論:一個人是否感覺富足,取決於身邊人的比較對象,而非絕對財富 —— "A house may be large or small; as long as the neighbouring houses are likewise small, it satisfies all social requirements. But let there arise next to it a palace, and the little house shrinks to a hut."
- Prof. Robert Lane(耶魯大學)研究:美國雖然全球最富有卻最不快樂,因為缺乏「人情味」("a kind of famine of warm interpersonal relations")
- Steve Jobs 案例:屢次失敗(Macintosh 銷量差、被逐出 Apple)但堅持信念最終東山再起 —— 適合論證「失敗是成功的必經之路」,呼應 Mickey Rooney 的名言 "You always pass failure on the way to success."
Some people believe that money is the key to happiness. Do you agree? Write an article for your school magazine."
Did you know that the more money we earn, the less happy many of us seem to become? It is a bitter irony that, despite average incomes rising steadily, four out of ten people believe life has become worse in the past five years. Karl Marx, for all his faults, understood this dynamic perfectly: happiness, he argued, is relative — a house feels adequate only until a palace rises next door. Diagnosed with this modern disease of comparison, we are constantly chasing a moving target of "enough".
Although a pay rise does bring a fleeting sense of satisfaction, this jump-start to well-being quickly wears off, and we soon find ourselves coveting the next luxury — a diamond-studded hat, perhaps, or a million-dollar pair of shoes. It has been suggested that, once our basic needs are met, additional wealth adds remarkably little to our overall happiness.
So what does bring lasting joy? According to Professor Robert Lane of Yale University, it is not money but a rich network of friendships and family ties that separates the genuinely content from the merely wealthy. Surviving hardship, maintaining close relationships, and finding purpose beyond material gain — these, not our bank balances, have the world at one's feet.
(Self-Editing Checklist)
(Life's Good / Lance Armstrong / Steve Jobs / 自學建議)的論據與語言素材。
